I'm the head coach at Columbia University. I'm joined today by and Katie Chrest Erbe, Assistant Coach at Columbia and Kaitlyn Jackson at GameDay Lacrosse. Today we're gong to give you top 3 tips for catching. As you'll see with Katie and Kaitlyn passing in the background, the grip on their stick is loose. It's what we call soft hands. You don't want to put a very tight grip around the shaft of your stick, it would cause for the ball bouncing out of the stick head because the grip is too rigid. Next tip, you want to be sure that you give your teammate a target, she's got to know where to throw the ball. Third tip, make sure that when you're catching, you're not snagging the ball out of the air. You're not grabbing it. In most cases that will result with the ball on the ground. You want to make sure that by using your body and your stick you're giving with the ball. Giving it time to settle into the head of your stick, so that you can then make a proper throw. So remember, use soft hands, give your teammate a target, and give with the ball as it's coming into your stick.

Today, I'm gonna give you my top three tips on dodging.  First of all, make some a dodger very effective is that being never plan a dodge.  They make one heard move, they read what their defender does and they react of what their defender does.  So if I were gonna dodge, I maybe make one heard move this way, if Liz bites, I'm gonna go the other way, okay?  If she doesn't go for it, then I'm just really gonna go around her.   So you never plan out your  dodge, you really just wanna react to what she gives you.  The second thing I wanna make sure to do is leave myself enough space.  If I end up too far on top of Liz and I make this move, then I have to come back around Liz in order to get by her, making me less efficient. So I wanna allow some space, maybe like a sticks length.  So if Liz put her sticks out in front of me, this is where I wanna start my move to see what she does.  Then I'm gonna react, have enough space to react to get around her.  Always moving my feet forward.  I never wanna move latterly, it'll give the defender chance to step back in front of me.  Finally, what will make a dodge very effective is their explosion out of their dodge.   So they wanna leave the dodge as first as they can.  So once I make this move on Liz, I get her to bite, I get by her, this next step needs to be as explosive as possible to add separation from Liz so that she can't get back in front of me.  So those are the top three things that make a dodger effective, reacting off of your defender, allowing enough space, and really exploding out of that dodge.

I'm an assistant lacrosse coach at Columbia University. This is Liz Kittlemen-Jackson[?]. She is the head coach at Columbia, and Caitlin Jackson with Game Day lacrosse, and I am going to teach you how to fake a shot today.  So this is a very useful skill and something that makes an attacker or someone who's going to shoot the ball a really effective shooter. The ability to kind of make the goalie get off of her line and kind of bite on a fake allows you to have more space to put the ball when you're going to shoot.  So faking is actually less about your stick than it is about your body. So what I mean by that is essentially what you want to do is you want to mimic all the actions that you would do if you were actually going to shot the ball. So if I were going to shoot the ball, I would turn my hips, turn my shoulders, and my stick would come through this like this. So I'm going to move my body in the motion that I would if I were shooting. I might even use my head to kind of throw that goalie off. So as I'm going, or as you can see these guys doing, they're going to rotate their shoulders around. They're going to act like they're actually throwing the ball, and then they're going to quickly get their stick back into position to take that shot.  So one thing that they're not doing is they're not bringing their stick out in front of them because if they bring their stick all the way around in front of them, the goalie then has this much time to get back into position. As you bring your stick back, she has time to get back into position to block that shot.   Another way to fake a shot is by changing your level. And so if you watch Caitlin, one thing she might do is drop her stick down low, making the goalie think that she's just going to put it in on the lower part of the cage. Then she's going to bring her shoulders back up and her hands back up and take that overhand shot. So she might fake a side arm shot, but come back over the top for an overhand shot. Likewise, she can fake high and then come back and roll it past that goalie. So if she were to take the ball, fake like she was going to go high, and then around that goalie, put it back in the goal. Good. So those are some different ways you can fake a shot.

I'm joined by Katie Crest Irvey, assistant lacrosse coach at Columbia, and Caitlin Jackson at Game Day Lacrosse. Today we're going to talk about some of the basics of cradling. So in order to be the most dynamic player you can be ,you want to make sure that you understand how to cradle so you can keep possession of he ball. One thing that you want to remember: cradling is not just about using only your arms, and it's not just about using only your wrists, it's about really incorporating the two. Understanding how to cradle at different levels is gonna be really important in terms of having the most well-rounded game and being able to protect your stick at all times. When thinking about protecting your stick from your defender, you want to think about keeping it in front of you,. so one way to think about cradling is to keep it between your shoulders. But you'll'll notice that Katie and Caitlin are not just using their arms or just using their wrists, but they're using a combination of both along with movement in their body to keep their stick protected between their shoulders. So you also want to be able to cradle at different levels. If you slide your top hand down a bit, this is going to allow you to bring your stick below your hip and change the level of your cradle. You'll notice that Katie and Caitlin are still using their arms and their wrists along with body movement. One key to a good cradle is having soft hands. You don't want to put a really tight grip on your stick, that's gonna limit what you're able to do. You want to allow the shaft of your stick to roll and move freely within your fingertips. This is going to allow you a lot more control over the ball. A lot of sticks today have the ability to have a really great pocket. You don't really need to over-cradle. Sometimes that makes it really predictable where your stick is going to go, and the defender can get a check off. It also has the potential for you to lose the ball when your'e cradling too much, Just allowing the stick to move freely in your hands, changing the level, and understanding how to protect by keeping it between your shoulders -- those are some of the keys to being able to cradle properly.

I'm the Head Lacrosse Coach at Columbia University. I'm Joined by Katie Chrest Erbe, Assistant Coach at Columbia, and Caitlin Jackson with Gameday Lacrosse. Today, we're gonna talk about some basics of checking in the game of lacrosse. Safety is a big part of our game, so you have to make sure that you're checking correctly. Some of the basics include; making sure that you're in front of your attacker, to make sure that you have a good vision of her stick, and that typically, you're a step in front. In getting off a good legal check, you want to make sure that you wait until the attacker exposes her stick. Then when you're going for the check, you're really just using your hands. You're not stepping into it, you don't want to lose your balance, cause that usually results in a foul. As soon as your attacker exposes her stick, you wanna reach towards the corner of the head. This is one of the best and the fastest ways to get the ball out of her stick head. Using a quick down and up motion is what's gonna help you get the ball out of her stick, safely and legally. You don't need to put all of your weight into it and you don't want to hold your stick on top of hers, that will result in a foul. So, remember, make sure that you're in front of the attacker, you wait for her stick to be exposed, and you do everything quickly, just with your hands, so that you can get the ball back safely.
